ABOUT SENSEI BRUNO BARRETO (Buguelo)
Head Coach of Team Carvalho UK and Italy

Born in "Vitoria da Conquista" (same city as the Nogueira brothers), Bahia - Brazil in December 1980.

My journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu started in 1996, I started out of curiosity with a cousin who was a blue belt at the time.
I trained for about a year but was forced to stop due to family problems.

1999 - I started training boxe with some of the leading boxing trainers in Salvador - Bahia, when my friend Augusto Cesar (Guga) took me to Team Edson Carvalho HQ and got me started again in BJJ, that's when I really fell in love with the sport once and for all.

2000 - Started competing in BJJ to represent Team Edson Carvalho and won the State Championship (Baiano) as white belt.

2001 - Earned my blue belt and again I got to be State Champion (2001 and 2002) as blue belt.

2003 - Was the year I reached two milestones: my purple belt and went to University. Although I still managed to train pretty everyday (up to 6 hours per session on weekends) I had to stop with the competitions in order cope with Uni's commitments

2005 - Earned brown belt, and during the same year I had my first experience abroad.Started living in Rome, Italy where I started "Team Carvalho Roma".
In Rome I have graduated athletes who've had great success both in BJJ and MMA.

2008 - I traveled back to Salvador for 30 days in June, that's when I was awarded my black belt from the hands of Master Ricardo Carvalho with Master Edson's bless. I then returned to Rome and continued to develop Team Carvalho Roma.

2010 - Arrived in UK and was fortunate enough to meet some great BJJ black belts who helped me a big deal in keeping my skills sharp until I could get my permanent visa and stand with my own two feet.

2011 - In April we officially started "Team Edson Carvalho UK" in East London and once again I take the duties as Head-Coach. The team is growing quickly and we are working hard to make it grow bigger and better with every training session.

In Italy, "Team Carvalho Roma" is still under my supervision, but is now fronted by my two Assistant-Coaches, purple belts "Valerio Poscia" and "Alexandre Tassio". Each leading their own gym they are great ambassadors to "Team Edson Carvalho" keeping its tradition of achievement and success!

ABOUT SENSEI EDSON CARVALHO

It all started in the city of Salvador, BA. That was the backdrop for the birth of a champion. His father Prof. Ciro was his first teacher; Edson Carvalho was practically born inside the world of Martial Arts and thus the seed of a champion was planted.

He lived downstairs in the building that housed the Itapagipano Judo Club, managed by Prof. Ciro and under supervision of Sensei Kazuo Yoshida, Edson started training at 4 years of age. At age 14 he had already developed his own technique and honed his knowledge to the point of becoming assistant teacher and instructor. He hasn't stopped ever since!"

After winning several titles in his home state, Edson Carvalho went to Rio de Janeiro in 1989, there he met the famous Prof. Mehdi, with whom he perfected his technique, didactics and knowledge.

He has an offensive style of fighting that blends techniques of projection, with emphasis on ground fights. Edson Carvalho is a formidable challenge to his opponents in any circumstance. His accomplishments are results of his classical training and carry the victory of unforgettable fights.

Edson Carvalho traveled to most countries, competing, teaching and training in countless international Dojos. The quality of his technique and his great knowledge are sought after and admired by many competitors and athletes in the Martial Arts world.

In 1992 Edson Carvalho won the Brazilian championships in Judo as well as the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Mundials in his weight and absolute divisions.

He is currently teaching at his school in Paterson, NJ (US) and training several Law Enforcement agencies in USA. He works with male and female police officers, SWAT teams and members of the Armed Forces.
